Serious songs of a serious young man – these cycles represent to some extent a spiritual journey. Though written at a time of happiness, newly married with a baby son, gainfully employed at Auckland and later Otago University and involved in a rich variety of musical activities, they carry a cry from the heart for certainty. The tenuous options of Shoriken and the capriciousness of human love give way to a place of rest through the Herbert songs; as Luigi Santucci writes,‘Wrestling with Christ’. Earnest they may be and yes, in a sense, a personal testimony.
